Coaching

What is coaching?

Coaching is a professional partnership that supports the achievement of extraordinary results, based on goals set by the individual. Through coaching, individuals focus on the skills and actions needed to successfully produce relevant results.

Coaching accelerates the individual's progress by providing greater focus and awareness of possibilities leading to enhanced performance. The coaching process concentrates on taking individuals from their current state of awareness and performance to an ideal state.

What are the benefits of coaching?

According to the 2009 ICF Global Coaching Client Study, coaching provided the greatest benefit from improvements in the following areas:

  • Self-esteem
  • Self-confidence
  • Interpersonal relationships
  • Communication skills
  • Work performance
  • Work/life balance
  • Wellness
  • Career opportunities
  • Personal organization
  • Business management
  • Time management
  • Team effectiveness

Does coaching provide a positive ROI?

  • Individual ROI: Just over two thirds (68%) of individuals indicated that they had at least made back their initial investment. The median suggests that a client who achieves a financial benefit from coaching can typically expect an ROI in the range of 344% or 3.44 times the amount spent.
  • Company ROI: The ROI for companies is even higher with a median return of 7 times the initial investment. The vast majority (86%) indicated that their company had at least made their investment back. In fact, almost one fifth (19%) indicated an ROI of at least 50 (5000%) times the initial investment while a further 28% saw an ROI of 10 to 49 times the investment.
(From the 2009 ICF Global Coaching Client Study conducted by Price Waterhouse)
  • Executives placed a value on their coaching of six times the cost paid for the service
  • 77% of executives who participated in coaching reported improved working relationships with direct reports, 71% improved relationships with supervisors, and 63% with peers
  • 61% of executives cited a marked increase in job satisfaction and 44% reported an increase in organizational commitment
    (As reported in Fortune Magazine)

How does Coaching differ from Management Development/Training, Mentoring, or Consulting?

Coaching assumes that the necessary expertise rests within the client, but is not surfacing for a variety of reasons. The coach’s role is to help the client unleash these latent skills and fully perform to his/her ability and potential. Management Development/Training, Mentoring, and Consulting all assume that the trainer, mentor, or consultant has expertise in a particular field of knowledge that needs to be transferred to the client. While successful coaches do engage in transferring knowledge or skill to the client, their greatest emphasis is guiding the client in a greater discovery of self-awareness and self-management.
